MEP coordination is often discussed as a modeling exercise. In reality, it begins much earlier: with decisions about plant, risers, ceiling zones, structure, architecture, utilities, access, controls, and how the building will operate.
Coordination starts before the model
A coordinated model can only reflect the quality of the decisions behind it. If equipment strategy, service routes, structural zones, access needs, and authority requirements remain unresolved, a visually complete model may still conceal significant delivery risk.
Early workshops give the architect, engineers, client, and key specialists a shared understanding of the constraints that will shape the building.
The decisions worth protecting early
Some engineering requirements have a disproportionate effect on area, height, structure, façade, and program.
- Central plant and major equipment locations
- Incoming utilities and authority interfaces
- Riser sizes and distribution philosophy

What good coordination delivers
The objective is not simply fewer clashes. Good coordination creates a design the contractor can understand, price, sequence, install, test, and maintain.
It also gives the client clearer visibility of decisions while there is still time to improve them, rather than forcing compromise during construction.
